GitHub Launches Copilot Fusion to Reduce AI Coding Costs
GitHub announced Copilot Fusion on October 28, 2026, introducing an AI coding system designed to balance coding performance, speed and cost. The system automatically selects and coordinates AI models based on each programming task, reducing the need for developers to switch models manually.
According to GitHub, Copilot Fusion Max achieved comparable benchmark performance to leading AI coding agents at approximately half the average API cost per task, with around 40% less completion time in the reported comparison.
Copilot Fusion offers Standard, High and Max effort levels and is available across GitHub Copilot plans in Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, the Copilot app and JetBrains IDEs.
The launch highlights GitHub's efforts to make AI-assisted software development more cost-efficient as developers increasingly use AI tools for coding, debugging and complex programming tasks.
