Mahindra Goes CNG: XUV 3XO ZNG Arrives at Rs 9.99 Lakh With Turbo Power and a 270-Litre Boot

Mahindra & Mahindra has entered India's booming CNG market with the XUV 3XO ZNG, the company's first mainstream CNG passenger vehicle. Launched on October 15, 2026, the CNG-powered compact SUV starts at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and tops out at Rs 12.27 lakh. Test drives have begun, and bookings and deliveries open on October 20.
Turbo Power, CNG Economy
Unlike many CNG cars that use small, low-powered engines, the XUV 3XO ZNG is built around Mahindra's 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. It produces around 110 to 114 PS and 200 Nm of torque, which means the CNG version keeps essentially the same output as the petrol model. Mahindra says the engine uses a 10 bar CNG injection system and was engineered for performance and driving dynamics, an area often compromised in CNG cars.
The SUV has a claimed mileage of 24.7 km/kg. As with all claimed figures, real-world efficiency will vary with driving style, traffic and load.
Twin Cylinders, Flat Boot
The ZNG uses a twin-cylinder layout, with two smaller CNG tanks packaged under the boot floor. This preserves a flat loading area and a 270-litre boot, addressing the usual boot-space trade-off that comes with conventional CNG installations. Tata's Nexon iCNG, which uses a similar twin-cylinder approach, offers a larger 321-litre boot.
Price and Variants
The XUV 3XO ZNG is offered in four variants, with ex-showroom prices as follows:
- MX Edge: Rs 9.99 lakh
- REVX Edge (O): Rs 10.79 lakh
- AX5: Rs 11.19 lakh
- REVX A: Rs 12.27 lakh
Six airbags and electronic stability control come as standard across the range, which gives the CNG model a safety advantage over many rivals in the segment.
The Competition
The ZNG targets the Tata Nexon iCNG and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG. The Nexon iCNG starts at about Rs 8.30 to 8.35 lakh and uses a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine making 100 PS and 170 Nm in CNG mode. The Brezza CNG starts at roughly Rs 9.30 to 9.40 lakh, with sources quoting slightly different figures. The XUV 3XO ZNG is the most expensive of the three at entry level but offers the highest torque of the group.
A Fast-Growing Fuel Choice
The timing reflects a major shift in buying habits. According to industry data, CNG's share of passenger vehicle sales rose from 6.3 per cent in FY2020 to 19.5 per cent in FY2025. Tata Motors sold more than 2.03 lakh CNG vehicles in the 12 months to September 2026, around 27 per cent of its volumes. Higher petrol and diesel prices have helped make CNG a mainstream choice for buyers who drive long distances.
Sales Milestone
The launch follows a major sales milestone. The XUV 3XO, including its XUV300 predecessor, has crossed 5 lakh domestic wholesales, with a total of 505,590 units between February 2019 and September 2026. The XUV 3XO itself, launched in April 2024, has sold about 2.57 lakh units. The total includes the XUV 3XO EV, which was unveiled in January 2026. Mahindra is expected to see the CNG variants add volume in FY2027, with projections of about 1.25 lakh units for the XUV 3XO family in the fiscal year.
What to Watch
Buyers will want to see real-world mileage tests, waiting periods after bookings open and whether Mahindra expands CNG to other models. Pricing is also worth watching, since the ZNG sits above the Nexon iCNG's entry price.
