Brahmacharini means "one who practises brahmacharya" — here in its broader sense of a disciplined, spiritual way of life devoted to the Absolute. She is the unmarried form of Parvati during the years she spent in penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband.
According to the Puranic accounts, after being born as the daughter of Himavan, Parvati resolved to marry Shiva, who was absorbed in deep meditation and detached from the world. On the advice of the sage Narada, she undertook severe penance.
The tradition describes her living for long periods on fruit and roots, then only on fallen bilva leaves, and finally giving up even leaves. That last stage earned her the name Aparna, "the one without leaves". Her austerity is said to have impressed the gods and sages, and Shiva eventually accepted her as his consort.
The story is less about hardship for its own sake than about resolve — staying steady toward a goal despite every difficulty.

ॐ देवी ब्रह्मचारिण्यै नमः॥
Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namah
Dhyana shloka:

By popular tradition, sugar, mishri (rock sugar) or fruits are offered to Maa Brahmacharini. Devotees believe the offering is linked with a long and healthy life for the family. Simple, sattvic offerings suit a goddess of austerity.
White stands for purity, peace and simplicity, mirroring the ascetic life of Brahmacharini. Wearing white on Day 2 is a popular custom, especially in Maharashtra and Gujarat, but it is optional.
If you are fasting, include fruit, milk, curd and enough water. Avoid pushing through dizziness or weakness. People who are pregnant, elderly or managing a health condition should seek medical advice before fasting.
