Kalaratri means "the night of time" or "the dark night" — the force that ends darkness itself. She is closely related to Kali, and is regarded as the form of the goddess that destroys every kind of negativity.
The best-known story linked with her fierce aspect concerns the demon Raktabija, who had a boon that every drop of his blood falling to the ground would create a new demon. As the goddess fought him, each wound multiplied his army.
According to the account in the Devi Mahatmya, the fierce goddess (Kali/Chamunda) spread out her tongue and drank his blood before it could touch the earth, finally destroying him. Kalaratri carries the same fearless, all-consuming energy.
Despite her fearsome look, Kalaratri is also called Shubhankari, "the one who does good". Her ferocity is aimed only at evil; devotees believe she frees them from fear, enemies and harmful influences.

Jaggery (gur) or sweets made from jaggery are traditionally offered to Maa Kalaratri. Devotees believe the offering removes sorrow and obstacles. Part of the prasad is often given in charity.
Grey represents balance and the dissolving of extremes — the twilight between darkness and light. It suits a goddess who turns fearsome power into protection. The colour custom is optional.
