Russia Launches Massive Missile and Drone Attack on Ukraine, Kyiv and Residential Areas Hit

Russia Launches Massive Attack on Ukraine
Russia carried out a major overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine on Wednesday, striking Kyiv and several other regions in an assault that caused significant civilian casualties and damage to residential and energy infrastructure.
According to Ukrainian authorities cited by Reuters, the nationwide death toll rose to at least 32, including children, while around 100 people were injured. The heaviest losses were reported in Pryluky in the Chernihiv region, where a Russian missile destroyed sections of a five-storey residential building.
Kyiv Apartment Buildings Hit
Kyiv was among the areas targeted during the overnight attack. Residential buildings were damaged, while falling drone debris and explosions caused deaths in the capital.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said several people were killed in the city, while residents sought shelter in underground metro stations as air-raid warnings continued. Emergency crews worked through the night to assess damage and rescue residents.
The attack also affected infrastructure in several districts of Kyiv, with emergency power restrictions reported following damage to the country's energy system. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said energy infrastructure was one of the key targets of the Russian assault.
Pryluky Residential Building Destroyed
The deadliest incident occurred in Pryluky, where a missile struck a five-storey apartment building.
Reuters reported that the death toll there had risen to 22, while dozens more people were injured. Rescue workers searched through collapsed sections of the building, using heavy equipment and ladders to reach survivors.
ABC News earlier reported that Ukrainian officials had initially confirmed five deaths and 26 injuries at the apartment building, including children, before the casualty count increased as rescue operations continued.
Russia Says Military Targets Were Hit
Russia's Defence Ministry described the operation as a “massive strike” against Ukrainian military-industrial facilities.
Moscow said it used high-precision weapons launched from land, sea and air, together with drones. Russia claimed it targeted facilities connected to the production and storage of missiles and drones, including sites linked to Ukrainian defence company Fire Point.
Russian authorities also said port and ship-repair infrastructure in the Odesa region was targeted.
Ukraine, meanwhile, said the attack caused widespread damage to civilian areas and energy infrastructure.
Ukraine's Air Defences Under Pressure
Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 70 missiles and dozens of Shahed attack drones during the assault. Ukrainian forces reported intercepting a significant proportion of the incoming weapons, but ballistic missiles remained a major challenge.
President Zelenskyy has continued to call for additional Patriot air defence systems, which Ukraine considers critical for defending its cities against high-speed ballistic missiles.
Russia-Ukraine War Intensifies
The latest Russia-Ukraine war attack comes as both sides continue long-range strikes against military, energy and infrastructure targets.
Ukraine also reported strikes against Russian facilities, including oil infrastructure, in retaliation for Moscow's attacks. The escalation has increased concerns over the security of civilians and Ukraine's energy supply as the country approaches winter.
The latest barrage underscores the continuing intensity of the Ukraine war, with Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities remaining vulnerable to large-scale missile and drone attacks despite strengthened air-defence efforts.
