Riyadh Airport Attack: Air India, IndiGo Suspend Flights as Houthis Escalate Strikes

Houthis Claim Missile Attack on Riyadh Airport
Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, is facing escalating security concerns after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels claimed a missile strike on King Khalid International Airport on October 8, 2026.
According to reports, a parked aircraft operated by Saudia Airlines caught fire and was heavily damaged after being hit by shrapnel from an interception or another projectile. Video verified by Reuters showed flames and thick black smoke rising from the airport. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured in the aircraft incident, and Saudi authorities had not publicly confirmed the Houthis’ specific claim of a direct hit.
The attack follows a series of strikes targeting Saudi airports. Saudi authorities have reported three deaths this week in attacks involving Riyadh and Abha airports, while debris from an intercepted missile reportedly damaged buildings in the capital.
Air India, IndiGo and Akasa Air Suspend Riyadh Flights
The escalating security situation has disrupted international air travel, with several airlines suspending services to and from Riyadh.
Air India, IndiGo and Akasa Air announced temporary suspensions, while Lufthansa Group also halted Riyadh services amid growing security concerns. Air India reported that a flight travelling from Delhi to Riyadh returned to Delhi following the developments.
The reported suspension periods varied by airline: IndiGo cancelled services through October 9, Air India and Akasa Air through October 10, and Lufthansa Group through October 16. Passengers should check current flight status directly with their airline, as schedules and restrictions may change.
The disruption could affect Indian expatriates, business travellers, migrant workers, tourists and passengers connecting through Saudi Arabia. Travellers with upcoming bookings may face cancellations, delays, rebooking costs or extended stays while airlines assess operational risks.
Why Are the Houthis Targeting Saudi Arabia?
The attacks are linked to the renewed conflict in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is backing the internationally recognised Yemeni government in its campaign against Houthi forces.
The Houthis have intensified attacks on Saudi territory as fighting escalates around strategic areas in southwestern Yemen, including the region near Taiz and the Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The group has also warned workers to stay away from Saudi energy facilities, raising concerns about potential threats to oil infrastructure and regional energy security. Any further attacks could have wider implications for aviation routes, shipping and international trade.
Syria Considers Support as Regional Tensions Rise
The crisis is also raising questions about wider regional involvement. Reuters reported that Syria was considering possible assistance to Saudi Arabia as the kingdom seeks support against Houthi advances. Any such involvement could further complicate an already volatile regional conflict.
For now, the immediate concerns remain airport security, civilian safety and the disruption of international flights. Passengers travelling to Saudi Arabia should monitor official airline advisories and government travel updates before departing.
