Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 Announcement Due Today

October 7, 2026: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm will announce the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry today, no earlier than 11:45 CEST (about 3:15 pm IST). It is the third of this year's six Nobel announcements.
Recent Chemistry Laureates
| Year | Laureates | Recognised for |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, Omar M. Yaghi | Development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) |
| 2024 | David Baker; Demis Hassabis and John Jumper | Computational protein design; protein structure prediction with AI |
| 2023 | Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, Alexei Ekimov | Discovery and synthesis of quantum dots |
| 2022 | Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, K. Barry Sharpless | Click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry |
The 2024 prize, shared by researchers from Google DeepMind for AlphaFold, underscored how artificial intelligence is reshaping science. The 2025 prize recognised MOFs, porous materials with applications in capturing carbon dioxide, harvesting water from air and storing gases.
How the Chemistry Prize Is Decided
The Nobel Committee for Chemistry evaluates confidential nominations with expert advisers and proposes candidates to the Academy, which makes the final decision. A maximum of three people can share the prize.
India and the Chemistry Nobel
Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, born in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome, the cell's protein-making machinery. He worked in the UK and US at the time.
