Market Outlook, October 12: GIFT Nifty Hints at Firm Open as Wall Street Nears Records; Kospi, Taiex Slip, Nifty Eyes 22,800

Indian markets began Monday, October 12, 2026 with a cautious-to-positive outlook after Friday's sharp rebound, but a sell-off in South Korea and a 5%-plus US Treasury yield kept sentiment guarded. GIFT Nifty pointed to a modestly higher start, while analysts warned that one strong session does not confirm a recovery.
Where Indian markets stand
On Friday, the Sensex rose 879 points (1.23%) to 72,472.33 and the Nifty 50 gained 289 points (1.30%) to 22,520.45. IT stocks led, with the sector up 3.02% after TCS's encouraging Q2 results, while FMCG gained 2.2% and PSU banks rose 1.63%.
GIFT Nifty signal
GIFT Nifty was trading around 22,625 to 22,645 in early deals, up roughly 0.17%, or about 44 points, pointing to a gap-up opening, per Upstox and Sunday Guardian. HDFC Securities noted the Sensex and Nifty were up about 0.4% in pre-open, helped by steps the Reserve Bank of India announced over the weekend to support the rupee.
Update: Later in the morning, NewsDrum reported that the Sensex had erased an early 329-point gain and turned red, as selling pressure returned.
Wall Street: DJIA, S&P 500, Nasdaq
US stocks rose on Friday to end a week in which the S&P 500 hit a record high:
| Index | Friday close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 51,654.95 | +423.31 (+0.83%) |
| S&P 500 | 7,811.54 | +46.18 (+0.59%) |
| Nasdaq Composite | 27,366.17 | +172.83 (+0.64%) |
The S&P 500 finished close to the all-time high of 7,844.52 set earlier in the week. The rally came despite a bond sell-off that pushed the 10-year Treasury yield to its highest level since 2002 at one point. Investors are now watching US bank earnings and CPI and PPI inflation data this week, and Delta Air Lines' disappointing results kicked off earnings season on a mixed note.
Asia: Kospi and Taiwan
Asian markets opened the week cautiously on worries about stretched technology valuations ahead of earnings and the impact of geopolitical developments on energy supplies:
- South Korea's Kospi: Fell about 2% early, with selling in semiconductor heavyweights. A later report put the decline at 2.87%.
- Taiwan's Taiex: Down 0.3% as investors awaited quarterly results from major chipmakers.
- China's CSI 300: Slipped 0.08%.
- Hong Kong and Shanghai: Modestly higher in morning trade, per Upstox.
- Japan's Nikkei: Closed for the Sports Day holiday, thinning regional trading.
Nifty prediction and key levels
Analysts' views, which are opinions and not forecasts:
- Anand Rathi sees support at 22,200 to 21,900 and resistance at 22,800 to 23,200, and describes the bias as cautiously constructive, with Friday's bounce a first sign of a possible bottom.
- Bajaj Broking Research, quoted by Goodreturns, cautioned that the rebound does not yet confirm a sustained recovery. It noted the Nifty is recovering from the April 2026 low of 22,182.
- Sustained foreign investor selling could cap gains, while further buying in IT and heavyweights could support the indices.
What to watch today
- Q2 earnings from HCL Technologies, ICICI Prudential Asset Management and RBL Bank, plus DMart and other results this week.
- Crude oil, which has pulled back but remains elevated amid West Asia tensions.
- The rupee after the RBI's weekend measures.
- FII and DII flows.
- US inflation data and bank earnings later this week.
