India's vulture crisis
In the 1990s and 2000s, India's vulture populations crashed by more than 95% for several species. The main cause was diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory drug given to livestock. Vultures that fed on carcasses of treated cattle suffered kidney failure and died.
The consequences went beyond birds:
- Uneaten carcasses increased the spread of disease
- Feral dog populations grew, contributing to rabies risk
Conservation response
- India banned veterinary diclofenac in 2006, and has since restricted other harmful drugs such as ketoprofen and aceclofenac for veterinary use.
- Vulture Conservation Breeding Centres were set up, including at Pinjore in Haryana.
- The government launched the Action Plan for Vulture Conservation 2020–2025.
- Vulture Safe Zones were created to keep landscapes free of toxic drugs.
Why the sighting matters
Sightings in places like Munsiyari, a Himalayan town known for its forests and alpine landscapes, help scientists understand where surviving vultures live and move. Recording such sightings helps:
- Map important habitats
- Guide protection of nesting and feeding areas
- Measure whether recovery efforts are working
The sighting comes days after the WWF Living Planet Report 2026 reported a 73% average decline in monitored wildlife populations since 1970.
