COP31 Countdown: Fiji to Host Pre-COP Next Week as Antalya Prepares for November Climate Summit

COP31 Countdown: Fiji to Host Pre-COP Next Week as Antalya Prepares for November Climate Summit
30 September 2026 — With less than six weeks to go before the COP31 UN climate conference, attention now turns to the Pre-COP meeting in Fiji, scheduled for 5–8 October 2026, which will include a leaders' event in Tuvalu.
What Is the Pre-COP?
A Pre-COP is an informal ministerial meeting held weeks before a UN climate summit. Ministers use it to test positions, narrow differences and shape the political agenda before formal negotiations begin.
Holding the Pre-COP in the Pacific places the concerns of small island states — sea-level rise, adaptation and loss and damage — at the centre of the build-up. The timing follows the UN General Assembly's high-level meeting on sea-level rise on 24 September.
COP31 at a Glance
- Dates: 9–20 November 2026
- Venue: Antalya Expo Center, Antalya, Türkiye
- COP President: Murat Kurum, Türkiye's Minister of Environment
- President of Negotiations: Chris Bowen of Australia, under a special arrangement between Türkiye and Australia
- World Leaders' Summit: 11–12 November, unusually held on days three and four of the conference
Key Issues on the Table
- Climate finance: implementing the goal of at least $300 billion a year by 2035 and the roadmap toward $1.3 trillion
- Adaptation: scaling up support for vulnerable countries
- Emissions cuts: strengthening national climate plans (NDCs)
- Energy transition: civil society groups have urged action on coal subsidies and a just transition
Why It Matters
COP31 follows COP30 in Belém, Brazil, and comes as scientists warn the world is not on track to limit warming in line with the Paris Agreement. For India, key concerns include affordable finance, adaptation support and fair burden-sharing.
