Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: Heavy Rain Warning for 9 Districts, Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure System May Bring More Showers

Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Heavy Rain Alert Issued for 9 Districts
The Tamil Nadu rain alert for October 9, 2026, has raised concerns about heavy showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several parts of the state. The Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre has warned that isolated areas in nine districts and hilly regions could experience heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and winds reaching 40–50 kmph.
The districts and areas under the heavy-rain forecast include Coimbatore’s hilly areas, the Nilgiris, Theni, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Kanniyakumari and the hilly areas of Tirunelveli. Moderate rain with thunderstorms and strong winds is also possible in several other districts.
Chennai Weather Today: Will the City Receive Heavy Rain?
Residents of Chennai and its suburban areas may experience light rainfall, particularly during the night and early morning hours. While the latest reports do not indicate the same heavy-rain forecast for Chennai as for the identified districts, weather conditions could change as the regional system develops.
People travelling during periods of rain should remain alert to slippery roads, reduced visibility and localised waterlogging. Residents in areas prone to flooding should monitor official weather advisories.
Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure System May Increase Rainfall
Another important development is the possibility of a new low-pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal. According to the Chennai Meteorological Centre update reported by Thanthi TV, the system may move northwestwards over the following four days towards the coast of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh.
If the system develops and follows the projected path, rainfall could increase across coastal Tamil Nadu in the coming days. However, its development and movement remain forecast-dependent, and residents should follow subsequent updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Tamil Nadu Rain Forecast for October 10 and the Coming Days
The weather department has indicated that isolated heavy rain may continue on October 10 in the hilly areas of Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and Theni. Moderate rainfall is possible in districts including Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari.
Thunderstorms and gusty winds may accompany showers in affected areas. Rainfall is also expected to continue intermittently across parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal over the following days.
Safety Advisory for Residents
Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during intense thunderstorms, stay away from exposed areas during lightning and secure loose outdoor objects when strong winds are forecast. Farmers, motorists and people living in low-lying areas should monitor local alerts and follow official instructions.
