Linda Cardellini Becomes Pamela Voorhees as Peacock Drops the Friday the 13th Prequel Crystal Lake

Peacock and A24's Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake premiered on Thursday, October 15, with all eight episodes streaming at once. Starring Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, the show arrives after a long and troubled development and is the franchise's first new screen project in 17 years.
What Is Crystal Lake About?
Set in the early 1970s, around eight years before the events of the original 1980 film, the series follows Pam Voorhees after the apparent death of her son Jason, who drowns at summer camp. It explores her grief, her past and the dark path that turns a loving mother into the franchise's first killer. The story takes place in the small New Jersey town of Crystal Lake, where the camp is located, and Pam works as a cook at the camp and the local school while raising Jason alone.
Cast and Creative Team
Cardellini, a four-time Emmy nominee, leads the cast alongside William Catlett as Levon Brooks, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Cameron Scoggins and Devin Kessler. Callum Vinson plays young Jason in a recurring role, and the supporting cast includes Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch and Phoenix Parnevik.
Brad Caleb Kane serves as showrunner. The directors are Michael Lennox, Logan George, Celine Held and Quyen Tran, and the writers include Kane, Evan Endicott, Josh Stoddard, Karl Taro Greenfeld and Laura Marks, with Bryan Fuller credited on the story.
A Long Road to Screen
The series was announced by A24 with Fuller, creator of Hannibal, as showrunner. In May 2024, it emerged that Fuller had been dropped after the studio decided to take the series in a different direction. Kane replaced him, and the project went on to complete production for Peacock. An earlier plan was reported to carry a budget of roughly $10 million per episode.
How Are the Reviews?
Critics are divided. Almost all reviews praise Cardellini, with several calling her portrayal of a loving mother whose repressed rage turns violent the show's strongest asset. One review described her performance as a ferocious turn, and another said she makes viewers feel the love and pain behind Pam's violence.
The criticism centres on the storytelling. Some reviewers found the early episodes slow, said the writing could not match the inventiveness of the kills, or felt the series exists mainly to extract more value from a well-known brand. Others were more forgiving, calling it a flawed but satisfying debut with a high body count and retro VHS-style touches. A prominent critic gave it a C grade, while another suggested that the finale and the penultimate flashback episode feel rushed.
Where to Watch
All eight episodes are available on Peacock in the United States. In Australia, the series arrives on Stan on October 16. The first three Friday the 13th films joined Peacock on October 1, giving fans time to catch up before the prequel.
Why It Matters
Crystal Lake is part of a wave of horror prequels and reboots that reimagine famous villains for streaming audiences. For Peacock, it is a key Halloween-season title, and for A24 it is a rare step into long-running slasher territory. The mixed reaction shows how hard it can be to expand a simple film premise into a long-form series.
What to Watch Next
Peacock's October slate also includes the Peacock original The Wolves of Real Estate on October 25 and the Minions & Monsters film on October 28. Viewers will be watching whether Crystal Lake finds a larger audience through word of mouth over the Halloween period.
