India Wins WTTC Global Summit 2027 for New Delhi as Minister Urges Travellers to Look Beyond the Golden Triangle

India will host the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit in New Delhi in 2027, the council announced on October 9, 2026 at the close of its 26th Global Summit in Valletta, Malta. India's Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has since used the moment to urge international travellers to look beyond Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.
What was announced
WTTC chose India after a competitive process. Reports cite 21 or 22 interested destinations, depending on the outlet. Travel Weekly said the event will bring leading global travel and tourism CEOs and government leaders to the capital, while WTTC chairman Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio said the council was delighted to bring its flagship event to India. WTTC president and CEO Gloria Guevara called India a natural host given its scale, ambition and growing connectivity.
WTTC has not announced dates or a venue for the 2027 summit, according to Asian Hospitality. eTurboNews says Delhi last hosted the summit in 2005, 22 years earlier. Trade reports suggest around 5,000 attendees, though that figure has not been confirmed by WTTC.
Shekhawat took part in discussions in Malta and was presented with the WTTC Global Champion Award for his leadership and contribution to the sector.
"Beyond the Golden Triangle"
Speaking on a panel titled "India: The Next Global Travel Destination," Shekhawat said India's international image is too closely tied to its three best-known cities, saying India is "much, much, much beyond all three cities," as reported by RusTourismNews. He pointed to regions such as Hampi, Kerala, Goa and Northeast India as having strong potential. The same report said the challenge is making sure hotels, airports and transport can handle greater demand, and noted WTTC leaders highlighted hotel shortages and infrastructure needs.
The numbers behind the pitch
According to WTTC data reported by IndexBox, India's travel and tourism sector contributed $263.6 billion to the economy in 2025 and is projected to nearly double by 2036. Asian Hospitality adds that WTTC expects India to rise from the world's 10th-largest travel and tourism economy to fourth.
Other tourism signals this week
- Zostel reported that festive travel in India rose about 50%, with a surge in short trips and Himalayan escapes, according to Travel and Tour World.
- An ASSOCHAM-CBRE report highlighted six emerging travel segments: spiritual, MICE, wellness, cruise, rural and wildlife, with expressways becoming tourism corridors.
- TravelBiz Monitor reported on October 13 that India's tourism growth has not translated into global gains as the share of young travellers slips; this story is based on the headline only and not on the full report.
Why it matters
Hosting the summit gives India a stage to attract investment and push its case with global airlines, hotel groups and tour operators. Whether it delivers depends on delivering the hotels, connectivity and visitor experience the minister and WTTC leaders described.
