Google Signs 20-Year Nuclear Power Deal With Constellation to Add 890 MW for AI Data Centres

United States, October 2026: Google and Constellation Energy have agreed a 20-year arrangement to add 890 megawatts (MW) of new nuclear generating capacity to the PJM electricity grid, which serves much of the eastern United States.
Key details
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| New capacity | 890 MW |
| How | Upgrades ("uprates") at 11 existing nuclear reactors |
| Locations | Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey |
| Investment | More than $4 billion |
| First added power | Expected in 2028 |
| Total relationship | ~3.59 GW, including ~2.7 GW of existing generation |
What is a nuclear uprate?
An uprate increases the output of an existing reactor, typically by upgrading turbines, generators and other equipment. It does not require building a new plant. Uprates can add carbon-free power faster and more cheaply than new reactors, which often take a decade or more to build.
Why Big Tech wants nuclear power
- AI data centres need huge amounts of electricity, available 24 hours a day.
- Nuclear provides steady, carbon-free power, unlike solar and wind, which vary with weather.
- Tech companies have climate pledges to cut emissions while their energy use grows rapidly.
Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta have all signed nuclear agreements in recent years, including deals to restart retired plants and to support small modular reactors (SMRs).
Why it matters
The deal shows how the AI boom is reshaping energy markets. Grid operators such as PJM have warned about tight supply as data-centre demand grows. Adding capacity at existing plants eases that pressure without new land or long permitting timelines.
For India, which is expanding nuclear capacity and recently opened parts of the sector to more private participation, such deals show a possible model for powering its own data-centre growth.
