What Oratomic is building
Oratomic is developing neutral-atom quantum computers aimed at fault-tolerant computing.
How neutral-atom quantum computers work
- Individual atoms are trapped and arranged using focused laser beams called optical tweezers.
- Each atom acts as a qubit, the basic unit of quantum information.
- Lasers control the atoms and create entanglement between them to run computations.
Neutral-atom systems can be scaled to large numbers of qubits and can rearrange qubits flexibly, which is useful for error correction.
Why fault tolerance matters
Today's quantum computers are noisy: qubits lose information quickly and make errors. A fault-tolerant quantum computer uses error correction to combine many physical qubits into reliable "logical" qubits. Only fault-tolerant machines are expected to solve commercially important problems such as:
- Drug and materials discovery
- Chemistry simulation for batteries and fertilisers
- Optimisation in logistics and finance
- Breaking some current encryption methods (one reason governments push post-quantum cryptography)
The quantum investment boom
Investment in quantum computing has grown alongside AI. Big tech companies and startups are racing toward error-corrected machines. India is also investing through its National Quantum Mission, approved in 2023 with an outlay of about ₹6,000 crore.
What happens next
Watch for Oratomic's technical milestones, such as demonstrations of logical qubits with low error rates, and partnerships with cloud providers or research institutions.
