Apple Will Require 18+ Ratings for Dating Apps and Romantic AI Companions

Apple is tightening its App Store age-rating requirements by introducing a mandatory 18+ classification for dating apps and AI companion platforms that offer romantic or sexual content. The change aims to give users and parents clearer information about relationship-focused applications available on Apple devices.
Under the updated policy, developers must declare whether their apps include dating and relationship features. Apple will introduce a new Dating and Relationships content descriptor in App Store Connect on November 16, 2026. Apps declaring these features will receive a minimum 18+ age rating.
The policy also introduces a separate Shared Location descriptor for applications that allow users to share their real-world location with others. However, this feature does not automatically result in an 18+ rating in every region.
Developers must complete the new content declarations for their apps by January 12, 2027. Existing applications may need updated age ratings depending on their features and content.
The change also affects AI companion platforms that engage users in romantic or sexual interactions. However, it does not apply to every AI chatbot or general-purpose assistant. The classification focuses on the nature of the interactions rather than simply whether an application uses artificial intelligence.
For parents, the updated ratings can work alongside Apple's existing Screen Time parental controls, allowing them to restrict applications based on age classifications.
The policy does not introduce a blanket ban on dating applications or AI companions. Instead, it changes how these services are classified and presented in Apple's App Store, giving users more information about the content they may encounter.
