Alberta Votes to Stay in Canada: About 76% Reject Starting a Separation Process

What happened
Voters in the Canadian province of Alberta rejected a proposal to begin moving toward independence in a referendum held on Monday, 19 October 2026. With about 1.8 million votes counted, preliminary projections showed roughly 76% voting to remain in Canada and about 24% backing the start of a legal process that could have led to a binding separation vote.
The question on the ballot
Voters were asked whether Alberta should remain a province of Canada, or whether the provincial government should begin the constitutional process needed to hold a binding referendum on separation. It was one of ten questions on the ballot; the others covered issues such as immigration, access to provincial services, voter ID and judicial appointments. Preliminary results showed voters backed eight of those nine other measures.
How it got here
- A pro-Canada citizen petition, "Alberta Forever Canada", gathered more than 400,000 verified signatures.
- A separatist petition faced legal challenges in court, including over consultation with Indigenous peoples.
- In May 2026, Premier Danielle Smith announced that a remain-or-separate question would go on the October ballot.
Reactions
- PM Mark Carney: "I'm thrilled that Albertans have chosen unity."
- Premier Danielle Smith, who said she voted against independence: "Albertans have voted for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada."
- Jeffrey Rath of the Alberta Prosperity Project said the independence push would continue.
What happens next
The vote does not change Alberta's status. Smith has said she will not hold another such vote while in office. Her government is expected to refocus on demands for greater provincial autonomy and on implementing the other ballot measures voters approved.
Under Canada's Clarity Act framework, any province's departure would require constitutional negotiations — a high bar that this result leaves untested.
