Bharat Spice Map Proposed to Match India's Spice Production With Industry Demand

Kochi, Kerala, 9 October 2026: The Spices Board India and the ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) held a national seminar in Kochi to discuss the proposed Bharat Spice Map, an initiative to match spice production with industry demand.
What is the Bharat Spice Map?
The proposed map would bring together information on:
- Where different spices are grown across India
- How much is produced and of what quality
- What industry needs, including exporters, food processors and pharmaceutical and cosmetic users
By linking supply and demand, the map aims to help:
- Farmers choose crops and varieties with strong markets
- Industry source the right quality and quantity
- Policymakers plan support, processing infrastructure and export promotion
India: the world's spice bowl
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Global position | World's largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices |
| Key spices | Chilli, cumin, turmeric, black pepper, cardamom, ginger, coriander |
| Regulator / promoter | Spices Board India (Ministry of Commerce) |
| Research body | ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode |
Challenges the map could address
- Quality and safety: in 2024, some Indian spice brands faced recalls and bans abroad over alleged contamination, highlighting the need for better traceability.
- Price volatility: farmers often face boom-and-bust cycles when supply and demand don't match.
- Value addition: India exports large volumes of raw spices but has room to grow in processed and branded products.
- Climate risks: changing weather affects yields of crops like pepper and cardamom.
Why it matters
Spices are a major source of income for millions of farmers, especially in Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Better data and market linkage can increase farm incomes and strengthen India's position in a competitive global market.
What happens next
Recommendations from the seminar are expected to inform the design of the map. Details such as rollout timelines and digital platforms have not yet been announced.
