Directed by Rob Savage and produced by James Wan's Blumhouse-Atomic Monster banner, the film follows a mother whose eight-year-old daughter forms a bond with a sinister entity in their home that looks uncannily like her. Chastain plays dual roles, the real mother and the creature. It is based on Josh Malerman's 2024 novel Incidents Around the House and is distributed by Universal Pictures.
Critical reception has been mixed to negative. Rotten Tomatoes' critics' summary praises Chastain's performance but calls the film too silly for its jump scares to add up to a satisfying whole. Reports also noted that Universal held the film back from most critics until close to release.
In the US, Deadline's Friday update projected an opening weekend of about $27.5 million across 3,365 screens, enough to top the domestic chart.
