The date was announced on Sunday, October 11, with a new ensemble poster on the first day of Navratri. It moves Part 1 from the Diwali window to just before the festival, and ETV Bharat noted that different dates had appeared in earlier promotional material.
The Ramayana is traditionally attributed to the sage Valmiki and is one of India's two great epics. It tells the story of Prince Rama's exile, the abduction of his wife Sita by the demon king Ravana, and the war to bring her back, with the devotion of Hanuman at its heart. The film is a new retelling for the screen, not a remake of an earlier film.
| Actor | Role |
|---|---|
| Ranbir Kapoor | Rama |
| Sai Pallavi | Sita |
| Yash | Ravana |
| Sunny Deol | Hanuman |
| Ravie Dubey | Lakshman |
| Lara Dutta | Kaikeyi |
| Indira Krishnan | Kaushalya |
Wikipedia lists a wider ensemble that includes Rakul Preet Singh (Surpanakha), Arun Govil, Anupam Kher, Kajal Aggarwal, Vivek Oberoi and Kunal Kapoor. It describes Yash's participation as his Hindi film debut and Ravie Dubey's as his film debut.
Reported but not officially confirmed: IMDb News, citing sources, said Ranbir Kapoor would also play Parashurama and that Amitabh Bachchan would lend his voice to the bird Jatayu. Treat these as unconfirmed until the makers announce them.
The first song, "Jai Jai Ram," was composed by A. R. Rahman with lyrics by Kumar Vishwas and vocals by Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh, released around Ganesh Chaturthi.
The first teaser, titled "Rama," was released on April 2, 2026, on Hanuman Jayanti. Gulf News reported that online reactions were mixed, with some viewers praising the scale and performances while others felt the visual effects could have been better or more rooted in Indian aesthetics.
Reports differ widely, so the numbers should be treated with caution:
| Source | Figure |
|---|---|
| Industry report cited by CinemaView | About ₹835 crore (about $100 million) for Part 1 |
| Report cited by Sacnilk | About ₹1,500 crore for Part 1 including production and marketing |
| Attributed to Namit Malhotra, per Outlook India | About ₹4,000 crore for the full two-part franchise |
The makers have not published an official breakdown for Part 1.
If it performs well, Ramayana could set a new benchmark for the scale of Indian productions and for multi-language pan-India releases. If it falls short, its large reported costs and the two-part structure raise the stakes. It is too early to say either way.
