Zero-click search and what to do next

Early October 2026 brought some of the clearest evidence yet on how AI search affects the open web. A randomized field experiment involving about 1,100 tracked Google users found that Google's AI search features reduced referrals to external websites. Participants assigned to AI Mode were less likely to click external links, ran fewer search sessions and reported lower satisfaction with Search. They were also more likely to try Bing, DuckDuckGo or Yahoo. In the group where AI Overviews were removed, external clicks rose, and there was no detectable decline in how users perceived Google Search.
For publishers, the finding is uncomfortable but useful: it suggests the click is under pressure, and that this is not simply the price of a better user experience.
One study does not settle the debate. The sample was about 1,100 users, behavior varies by country, device and query type, and Google's products continue to change. The study also measured referral clicks and satisfaction, not the commercial value of impressions or brand exposure inside AI answers. Treat it as a strong signal to investigate your own data, not as a forecast for every site.
Publishers whose pages mainly answer simple informational questions face the greatest risk, since an AI answer can satisfy that need directly. Sites built on affiliate comparisons, news aggregation and basic how-to content should review their exposure first. Businesses with strong brands, loyal audiences or transaction-based pages tend to be more insulated, because visitors come for a product, a relationship or a service that a summary cannot provide. Whatever your category, the safest assumption is that informational queries will keep shifting toward AI answers, so plan for lower click volume per impression and focus on the quality of the visits you do receive.
| Old Metric | Better Metric |
|---|---|
| Average position | Visits, leads and conversions |
| Impressions | Brand citations in AI answers |
| Rank for a keyword | Share of voice across AI and organic results |
Position data is itself becoming less reliable. Analysis published the same week noted that Search Console treats an AI Overview as one block and gives every link inside it the same position, regardless of where it visually appears. Combine position with clicks, conversions and manual checks.
| Content Type | Why It Resists Summarization |
|---|---|
| Original research and surveys | Cannot be replaced by a summary |
| Interactive tools and calculators | Require a visit to use |
| Expert opinion and analysis | Valued for the author's perspective |
| Product comparisons with testing | Rely on first-hand evidence |
Simple definitions and generic how-to explanations are the most exposed, since an AI answer can cover them in a paragraph.
The study does not mean search is dead, but it does show that rankings are no longer a reliable proxy for traffic. Publishers who invest in original value, brand strength and diversified channels will be better placed than those who rely on being the answer to simple questions. Track your own numbers, test changes and revisit your strategy as Google's AI features evolve.
