A spectacular Roman mosaic has been revealed beneath Rome's Oppian Hill, close to the Colosseum, after centuries buried beneath the remains of Trajan's Baths. Measuring approximately 10 metres high and 16 metres wide, the artwork is believed to date to the 1st century AD. Its detailed scenes include a philosopher, a centaur, a crowned poet and architectural views that may depict a real or imagined ancient port city. Archaeologists say excavation is continuing as they investigate the mosaic's origins and extent.
