Waymo Raises $5 Billion in First-Ever Debt Financing to Expand Robotaxi Fleet

United States, 8 October 2026: Waymo, the autonomous-driving company owned by Google parent Alphabet, has closed a $5 billion term loan, its first-ever debt financing.
Deal details
| Item | Detail |

Why Waymo is borrowing
Running a robotaxi service is capital-intensive. Waymo must:
- Buy and fit out thousands of vehicles with sensors and computers
- Build depots, charging and maintenance facilities
- Expand into new cities, each requiring detailed mapping and regulatory approval
Debt lets Waymo fund this growth without further diluting its owners. Lenders are betting that its paid ride revenue will be steady enough to repay the loan.
Waymo's position
Waymo operates fully driverless ride-hailing services, with no safety driver, in several US cities and has been expanding to new markets. It is widely considered the leader in Level 4 autonomous driving.
Part of a bigger trend
Tech companies are increasingly using debt to fund expensive AI and hardware buildouts:
- SpaceX is reportedly arranging about $40 billion in financing for Nvidia chips.
- Morgan Stanley estimates $1.5 trillion of external financing may be needed for AI infrastructure by 2028.
Meanwhile, competitor Tesla has renamed its "Full Self-Driving" system "Tesla Assisted Driving" in Europe after regulators raised concerns. The difference between supervised driver assistance and true driverless operation is becoming more important.
What happens next
Watch for Waymo's next city launches, regulatory decisions, safety data and whether other autonomous-vehicle companies follow with debt deals.
