Updated Flu Vaccines Roll Out Ahead of 2026-2027 Season

Health authorities are urging eligible individuals to get vaccinated as the 2026-2027 flu season approaches, with updated vaccine formulations now available to better match the strains expected to circulate this year.

Vaccine composition has been updated for the new season. Regulators revised all three virus components in this year's seasonal flu vaccines compared to last season, including a change targeting an H3N2 subclade that spread widely during the 2025-2026 season.

Vaccination is recommended for nearly everyone six months and older. Health agencies continue to recommend annual influenza vaccination for all eligible individuals without contraindications, with high-dose or adjuvanted formulations specifically recommended for adults 65 and older.

Timing matters for maximum protection. Flu season typically runs from October through March, and vaccination in September or October is generally considered ideal for building immunity before flu activity increases.

Supply is expected to meet demand. Regulators anticipate an adequate and diverse supply of approved seasonal flu vaccines from multiple manufacturers this season.

Public health officials continue to emphasize that alongside vaccination, everyday preventive habits such as handwashing and staying home when symptomatic remain important for limiting flu transmission.
