Why it matters
China is the world's second-largest economy and India's largest source of imports. Its growth rate affects global demand for commodities, the prices of manufactured goods and the outlook for exporters across Asia.
Official coverage credited exports for much of the improvement. Analysts have also been watching China's long property slump and weak consumer spending; a quarter of faster growth does not by itself settle those concerns.
What to watch next
- Whether Beijing adds more stimulus to support domestic consumption
- Trade tensions with the US and Europe, which affect export-led growth
- Monthly data on retail sales, industrial output and property investment
