From Delhi theatre and television to one of the most famous film stars on the planet

Shah Rukh Khan, popularly known as SRK, is one of the most successful film stars in history and a cultural icon across South Asia, the Middle East and the global Indian diaspora. Over three decades he has starred in more than 80 Hindi films, become a symbol of romance and charm on screen, and turned his fame into a multi-business brand. His story — an outsider with no film-industry connections reaching the top — is a large part of his appeal.
Shah Rukh Khan was born on 2 November 1965 in New Delhi. His father, Taj Mohammad Khan, was a freedom fighter, and his mother, Lateef Fatima, was a magistrate. He attended St. Columba's School, where he excelled in sports and drama, and earned an economics degree from Hansraj College, Delhi University. He trained in theatre with director Barry John. Both his parents died before he became famous — his father in 1981 and his mother in 1991.
Khan's first roles were in the television series Fauji and Circus (1989). He moved to Mumbai in 1991 and made his film debut in Deewana (1992).
He then shocked audiences by playing anti-heroes in Baazigar and Darr (1993), before reinventing himself as a romantic lead.
| Year | Film | Significance |

| 2002 | Devdas | Lavish period drama, screened at Cannes |
| 2004 | Swades | Critically acclaimed social drama |
| 2007 | Chak De! India | Iconic sports film about women's hockey |
| 2010 | My Name Is Khan | International success addressing post-9/11 prejudice |
After several commercial setbacks in the late 2010s and a long break, Khan returned in 2023 with three hits:
Khan is a case study in personal branding:
Khan's next film, King, directed by Siddharth Anand (Pathaan), is scheduled for release on 24 December 2026. It marks his first big-screen release in three years and co-stars his daughter Suhana Khan, along with Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan.
Khan married Gauri Chibber in 1991; they have three children — Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. He is known for his wit in interviews and his philanthropy through the Meer Foundation, which supports acid-attack survivors.
Because of his long-running box-office dominance, huge global fan base and iconic romantic roles.
Deewana (1992), though he first became known through the TV series Fauji.
Yes, he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for Jawan.
It is scheduled for 24 December 2026.
Shah Rukh Khan rose from Delhi's theatre circuit to global superstardom without industry connections, and has remained relevant for more than 30 years. His blend of charisma, reinvention and business acumen makes him not just a film star, but one of the most powerful personal brands in the world.
