How retailers turned their own websites and apps into one of advertising's fastest-growing channels
A retail media network is an advertising platform built and owned by a retailer, letting brands pay for placement on that retailer's own digital and physical properties. Instead of buying space on a search engine or social platform, a brand pays the retailer directly to appear in sponsored product listings, homepage banners, app placements, or screens inside physical stores.
The defining feature is data. Retailers hold a large pool of first-party purchase data — what shoppers actually bought, not just what they clicked — and package that data into targeting and measurement tools for advertisers. This differs from traditional display or social advertising, which increasingly relies on modeled or probabilistic data as third-party cookies and device identifiers become harder to use for tracking.
Most retail media programs share a similar structure:
Campaigns are typically measured on retailer-reported metrics such as return on ad spend, attributed sales, and new-to-brand customer rates, because the retailer can tie an ad impression directly to a completed purchase in its own systems.
Three forces are driving adoption. First, the decline of third-party tracking has pushed advertisers toward channels with strong first-party data, and few data sets are as purchase-accurate as a retailer's own transaction history. Second, retailers have realized that advertising is a high-margin business layered on top of their existing retail operations, giving them a financial incentive to build out ad tech in-house or through partners. Third, brands want to measure marketing in terms of actual sales rather than clicks or impressions, and retail media offers a closed loop from ad exposure to purchase that is hard to replicate elsewhere.
| Factor | What to Evaluate |
|---|---|
| Data access | Does the network share campaign-level data or only aggregated summaries? |
| Measurement | Is attribution based on the retailer's own sales data or a third-party verification layer? |
| Reach | Does the retailer have enough traffic in your category to justify a dedicated budget? |
| Overlap | How much audience overlap exists with your existing search and social campaigns? |
| Minimum spend | Some networks require significant minimum budgets or exclusive category deals |
Expect retail media to keep expanding beyond pure e-commerce into categories like grocery, pharmacy, travel, and financial services, wherever a company has a large base of logged-in, transacting customers. Measurement standardization is likely to improve as industry bodies push for common definitions of terms like "attributed sales," making it easier for marketers to compare performance across networks. Brands that sell through multiple retailers will increasingly need a dedicated retail media strategy rather than treating it as an afterthought within their broader digital marketing budget.
Is retail media the same as e-commerce advertising?
Retail media is a subset of e-commerce advertising that specifically refers to ads bought directly through a retailer's own ad platform, using that retailer's first-party data, rather than general advertising about e-commerce products elsewhere.
Do I need to sell products on a retailer's site to use its retail media network?
Most retail media programs are built for brands that already sell through that retailer, since campaigns are usually tied to specific product listings and measured against sales of those products.
How is retail media different from a Google or social ad campaign?
The main difference is the data source and the point in the funnel. Retail media targets shoppers who are actively browsing or have previously purchased from that retailer, using verified purchase history, while Google and social platforms mix search intent or interest signals with broader audience data.
Is retail media only for large brands with big budgets?
No. Many networks offer self-service tools with flexible minimum spends, though the largest networks and most advanced measurement features are often reserved for bigger advertisers or exclusive partnerships.
Retail media networks have moved from a niche experiment to a core line item in digital marketing budgets because they connect advertising spend directly to verified purchase data. For marketers, the opportunity lies in treating retail media as its own discipline — one that requires evaluating each retailer's data access, measurement quality, and reach before committing budget, rather than assuming every network works the same way.
