From Madeira to Manchester, Madrid and Riyadh — the career of football's most prolific goalscorer

Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese forward and one of the most famous athletes in the world. Known for his relentless work ethic, athleticism and goalscoring, he has broken records across two decades at the highest level. He is also the most-followed person on Instagram, making him a global brand as much as a footballer.
Ronaldo was born on 5 February 1985 in Funchal, on the island of Madeira, the youngest of four children. His father, José Dinis Aveiro, was a kit man at a local club, and his mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, worked as a cook. He was named after US President Ronald Reagan, whom his father admired.
At 12, he moved alone to Lisbon to join Sporting CP's youth academy. At 15, he was diagnosed with a heart condition and underwent a procedure that allowed him to continue playing.
