Toyota is preparing a fully redesigned 2028 Corolla with its first-ever EV and plug-in hybrid variants, alongside a 60th-anniversary celebration of the world's best-selling car.
The Toyota Corolla, a nameplate that has held the title of the world's best-selling car for decades, is about to undergo its most significant transformation yet. Toyota is preparing a next-generation redesign expected to debut in 2027 as a 2028 model, and for the first time in the Corolla's 60-year history, the lineup will include a fully electric (EV) variant alongside a first-ever plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option.
This marks a major strategic pivot for Toyota, a company that has historically leaned on conventional hybrid technology rather than full electrification for its mass-market models. Bringing an EV Corolla to market signals the company is finally ready to compete more directly with electric compact rivals as global EV adoption continues climbing.
The next-generation Corolla is expected to support an unusually wide spread of powertrain options, giving buyers more choice than any previous generation:
Industry rumors circulating out of Japan have also pointed to Toyota developing a new, more thermally efficient 1.5-liter engine family — reportedly reaching over 46% thermal efficiency — that could underpin several of these powertrain options, alongside speculation of PHEV technology potentially developed in partnership with Chinese battery giant BYD, similar to systems already achieving over 1,300 miles of combined range in Chinese-market vehicles.
Toyota's design previews and concept vehicles suggest the next Corolla will adopt a dramatically more futuristic and aerodynamic look compared to today's model, with styling cues borrowed from recent Toyota mobility show concepts. The design language is expected to span multiple body styles, including:
Early renderings and spy-shot analysis suggest the new generation may lean into a more spacious, "airy" cabin design with larger digital displays, though some reports indicate Toyota may retain physical buttons and knobs for essential controls — a welcome note for drivers frustrated by touchscreen-heavy modern interiors.
While official pricing hasn't been confirmed, industry analysts project the following starting price ranges for the new lineup:
These projections would keep the Corolla firmly positioned as an affordable, accessible option even as it adds more advanced electrified powertrains to the mix.
Alongside the next-generation redesign, Toyota is currently rolling out special 60th-anniversary editions across global markets to commemorate six decades of the Corolla nameplate — one of the most commercially successful vehicles in automotive history.
These commemorative models serve as a send-off for the current generation while Toyota prepares to launch its most electrified and diverse Corolla lineup to date.
The addition of a fully electric Corolla variant represents one of Toyota's clearest signals yet that it's expanding its electrification strategy beyond hybrids and into pure EVs for its highest-volume models. Given the Corolla's global sales dominance and brand recognition, a successful EV variant could meaningfully accelerate mainstream EV adoption in markets where Toyota has historically been cautious about going all-electric. Expect more concrete details, official images, and confirmed specifications to emerge as the 2027 debut date approaches.
