Weekend Box Office: Verity Opens at No. 1 With $32.6 Million as Digger Falls Flat

Weekend Box Office: "Verity" Debuts at No. 1
The new film Verity topped the North American box office over the weekend of 2 to 4 October, according to figures from The Numbers and Rotten Tomatoes. Studio estimates put its three-day opening at about $32.6 million from 3,510 theatres, an average of roughly $9,300 per location.
Top of the Chart
Based on weekend estimates, the leading titles were:
| Rank | Film | Weekend gross (est.) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verity (new) | $32.6 million |
| 2 | Resident Evil | $12.5 million |
| 3 | Heart of the Beast | $11.0 million |
| 4 | Primetime | $8.0 million |
| 5 | Digger (new) | $8.0 million |
| 6 | Forgotten Island | $7.2 million |
Estimates are usually revised when final numbers arrive, so figures may change slightly.
Verity Leads, Digger Struggles
Verity's opening was more than twice the take of the second-place film. Digger, the other major new release, opened in fifth place with about $8 million, which Rotten Tomatoes described as getting "buried" by the competition. Smaller new arrivals included Beware Boiúna and the concert film Rolling Loud: The Movie, which both opened well below the top tier.
Holdovers Keep Earning
Resident Evil has now grossed about $124.9 million domestically after 17 days in release, falling roughly 46% from the previous weekend. Heart of the Beast passed $38 million in its second weekend, down about 45%. These drops are fairly typical for a second or third weekend.
Longer-running titles also remain on the chart. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed about $954 million domestically, and The Odyssey about $620 million, showing how strong the summer and early autumn slate has been for cinemas.
Streaming Heats Up
While theatres compete, streaming services are loading up for October, a month traditionally heavy on horror and fall series premieres. Among the dates reported by entertainment outlets:
- 7 October: Carrie on Prime Video, and Small Prophets on Apple TV
- 8 October: Season 8 of The Kardashians on Disney+
- 9 October: Disclosure Day on Peacock, and the Oasis reunion-tour documentary on Disney+
- 14 October: VisionQuest on Disney+
- 15 October: Crystal Lake on Peacock
Release dates can change and vary by region, so check each platform before planning your viewing.
What to Watch Next
Next weekend will test whether Verity can hold its audience, and whether any new wide release can unseat it. Studios often use October to launch horror and awards-season titles, so the chart could shift quickly.
Box office figures are early estimates and may be revised.
