Taylor Swift is adding another milestone to her already extensive MTV Video Music Awards record.
MTV and CBS have announced that Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at the 2026 VMAs on September 27. The new award celebrates artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music videos and visual storytelling.
Swift has increasingly taken control of the visual direction of her music, working as director on projects including “The Man,” “cardigan,” “willow,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled” and “Fortnight.” Her work has combined music with narrative storytelling, symbolism and cinematic elements.
The new honor also carries significance in the history of the VMAs.
Swift currently shares the record for the most VMA wins with Beyoncé, with 30 awards each. Receiving the Artist Director Honors will give Swift her 31st VMA and make her the ceremony's most awarded artist.
Swift is also a four-time winner of the VMA's Best Direction category. According to Rolling Stone, she has received eight nominations in the category and holds the record for Best Direction wins.
The new honor comes as Swift remains one of the major contenders at this year's ceremony.
She has received nine nominations for the 2026 VMAs, including Artist of the Year. Her video for “The Fate of Ophelia” is nominated across several categories, while “Opalite” is nominated for Best Direction.
The 2026 VMAs will be hosted by Snoop Dogg and will take place in Los Angeles on September 27. Madonna, Lisa, Raye and Shaboozey are among the announced performers, while Nirvana is scheduled to receive the Video Vanguard Award.
