Ransomware Attack Hits Japan's IDCF Cloud, Affecting About 495 Companies and Local Governments

Tokyo, October 2026: Japanese data-centre and cloud provider IDC Frontier has confirmed a ransomware attack on part of its IDCF Cloud East Japan Region 1. The attack began early on 7 October 2026.
What happened
- Virtual servers in several availability zones stopped and could not be restarted.
- About 495 companies and local governments were affected.
- IDC Frontier isolated its systems and contacted affected customers directly.
What is ransomware?
Ransomware is malicious software that encrypts a victim's data or systems, then demands payment, usually in cryptocurrency, to restore access. Many gangs also steal data first and threaten to leak it ("double extortion").
Why a cloud attack is especially serious
When a cloud provider is hit, the damage spreads to many customers at once:
- Businesses lose access to websites, apps and data
- Local governments may be unable to deliver online public services
- Recovery depends on the provider's backups and incident response
A wave of cyber incidents
The IDCF attack is part of a busy period for cybersecurity:
- In South Korea, investigators linked a Chinese-developed AI penetration-testing tool, ARTEX, to attacks on several banks.
- The US Justice Department and FBI seized seven domains linked to the hacking group known as Flax Typhoon.
Lessons for organisations
- Keep offline or immutable backups that ransomware cannot encrypt.
- Test disaster recovery regularly, including switching to another region or provider.
- Segment networks to limit how far attackers can move.
- Patch systems and use multi-factor authentication.
- Understand shared responsibility: know which security tasks your cloud provider handles and which you must handle.
For Indian organisations
India's CERT-In requires many organisations to report cyber incidents within six hours. The IDCF case is a reminder to review vendor risk and cloud resilience, as more government and business services move online.
What happens next
Watch for IDC Frontier's restoration timeline, any claim of responsibility by a ransomware group, and whether customer data was stolen.
