Google announced an expansion of AI Overviews into additional international markets and languages, continuing the rollout that began in the U.S. and has gradually extended across major search markets.
Publishers in newly added regions have raised familiar concerns about potential click-through rate declines as AI-generated summaries answer queries directly within the search results page. Google maintains that AI Overviews drive different, often higher-intent, click behavior rather than simply suppressing traffic, though independent studies on the topic remain mixed.
The expansion comes as competing AI-powered answer engines continue gaining usage share for informational queries, increasing pressure on publishers to optimize content for both traditional search rankings and AI-mediated discovery — an approach increasingly referred to as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
Google has not announced a timeline for when AI Overviews will reach full global coverage.
