Musk vs Ambani: "Prime Minister Ambani" Jibe, Reliance-Linked BJP Donation Reports Shared as Starlink India Row Escalates

Elon Musk has escalated his public dispute with industrialist Mukesh Ambani over the delayed launch of Starlink in India. He sarcastically addressed the Reliance chairman as "Prime Minister Ambani" and then shared media reports about Reliance-linked firms and the BJP. The posts on X came on October 9 and 10, 2026.
What Musk shared
According to reports from PTI and other outlets, Musk posted screenshots of two items:
- A 2022 Al Jazeera report on how a Reliance-funded firm boosts BJP campaigns on Facebook.
- An archived 2024 Indian Express report on Qwik Supply, a Reliance-linked company, which reported that it donated Rs 385 crore to the BJP and Rs 25 crore to the Shiv Sena through electoral bonds.
These are older media reports that Musk resurfaced. They are not new findings, and Wipidia has not independently verified them. Reliance had not publicly responded to Musk's latest allegations at the time of the reports.
The Starlink dispute
Musk accused Ambani of trying to protect a "monopoly" and asked whether he would allow Starlink to compete in India. In follow-up posts he argued that Starlink has proven essential in saving lives during natural disasters when other communication systems fail, and that it could help children and small businesses in underserved areas. He also said Starlink is licensed in more than 165 countries and has spent five years complying with Indian requirements, asking why it still has no licence.
The dispute pits Starlink against Reliance Jio, one of India's dominant telecom operators.
The government's position
Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said India does not allow monopolies in any sector. He said three entities, Starlink, Reliance Jio's satellite venture Jio Satcom and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb, have already secured licences, while Amazon's Kuiper has shown interest and must go through the established procedure. Reports also noted the BJP used the episode to attack the Congress, in the context of an exchange between Rahul Gandhi and Musk on X.
Why it matters
Satellite broadband is seen as a way to extend connectivity to remote areas, and India's satcom rollout depends on licensing and spectrum decisions that are still pending. The row has pulled a commercial licensing question into the political arena.
