Meta is taking another major step toward mainstream virtual reality and AI wearables with the launch of its new Meta VR Glasses. The company unveiled the glasses at Meta Connect 2026, positioning them as a new generation of computing hardware that combines the capabilities of a VR headset with the form factor of everyday glasses.
Unlike traditional VR headsets, the new Meta VR Glasses weigh approximately 100 grams, making them around five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3. The glasses use a separate computing and battery unit, or “puck,” connected through an optical tether. Meta says this design allows the glasses themselves to remain lightweight while still delivering high-performance VR experiences.
One of the biggest highlights is the 5K Infinite Display, built using micro-OLED panels and delivering 37 pixels per degree. The glasses also support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, positioning them as a personal cinema as well as a productivity device.
Meta has integrated its Meta AI agent directly into the operating system. Users can interact with applications using voice commands, eye movements and natural hand gestures instead of traditional VR controllers.
The glasses can also create a large, private multi-screen workspace. Users can connect them to Windows or Mac computers, while full-color passthrough allows them to continue seeing their physical surroundings, keyboard and smartphone. Meta says the glasses can even turn a flat surface into a virtual keyboard and touchpad.
Another major feature is hologram calling. Meta says the glasses can generate a photorealistic digital version of a person, including real-time expressions and reactions. During calls, the hologram can appear in front of the wearer with spatial audio designed to make the conversation feel more like an in-person interaction.
The technology is designed to work with popular calling platforms including WhatsApp and Zoom.
Meta is also targeting entertainment. The company says the glasses will support 3D movies, immersive cinema and live sports, with partnerships involving Disney, ESPN, MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC.
Meta plans to offer more than 100 immersive live sports events annually, including experiences featuring 180-degree views and 8K streaming. Disney+ subscribers will also be able to access selected 3D movies and themed environments such as Tatooine and Avengers Tower in supported markets.
The Meta VR Glasses are priced at $1,299.99 in the US and are scheduled to go on sale in Spring 2027.
Meta also expanded its broader AI-glasses portfolio at Connect 2026. The company announced Ray-Ban Meta Audio, its first camera-free audio glasses, starting at $349, while the new Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 starts at $449. Meta says its wider lineup will eventually include more than 100 options across Ray-Ban, Oakley and Meta Glasses.
With its combination of AI glasses, virtual reality, holographic communication and immersive entertainment, Meta is presenting its latest hardware as more than a conventional VR headset. The company is instead positioning the Meta VR Glasses as a potential next-generation personal computing platform.
