Mumbai Police detained two men after a security scare at a venue linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled event in Mumbai. One of the detained individuals allegedly posed as an official from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), while his bodyguard was found carrying a licensed firearm.
The incident took place late Monday night during a security protocol exercise at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), ahead of PM Modi’s scheduled visit to Mumbai on Tuesday.
According to Mumbai Police, a 24-year-old man identified as Rohan Parekh was noticed moving suspiciously near the high-security venue. During questioning, Parekh allegedly claimed to be a PMO official and produced an identity card. Police later determined that the PMO identity card was fake.
Parekh was accompanied by a bodyguard who was found carrying a gun. Police detained both men and recovered the firearm.
In a statement, Mumbai Police said that three men had allegedly used a suspicious government identity card to gain entry past security at Jio World Plaza in BKC, with one of them carrying a firearm. An FIR has been registered in connection with the incident.
Police clarified that the firearm recovered from the bodyguard was licensed. Authorities also stressed that the incident occurred on Monday and had no connection with Prime Minister Modi’s scheduled visit on Tuesday.
The incident triggered a security alert ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival in Mumbai. The Mumbai Police are questioning the detained individuals to establish their motive for entering the high-security area with a fake identity card and firearm.
The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation due to the seriousness of the incident. Investigators are also examining the suspects’ mobile phones, identity documents and other belongings as part of the probe.
PM Modi’s Mumbai Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai on Tuesday. The four-day event will conclude on September 11.
The conference is one of the major annual gatherings in the global fintech sector and will focus on emerging technologies and their role in shaping financial systems.
The theme of GFF 2026 is “Potential to Impact: Agentic AI, Tokenisation, Quantum - Trusted, Connected, Global Systems for Inclusive Finance.”
The security incident comes as Mumbai Police and other security agencies remain on heightened alert for the Prime Minister’s visit.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the fake PMO identity card, the firearm and the circumstances surrounding the alleged entry into the high-security venue.
