Why these seats mattered
- Nandigram is one of Bengal's most politically symbolic seats. It was the centre of the 2007 land agitation and the scene of the high-profile 2021 contest between Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari. The BJP won the state in the May 2026 Assembly election, and Adhikari became Chief Minister.
- Thattanchavady fell vacant after N. Rangaswamy resigned the seat.
- Nagaon fell vacant after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned.
Reactions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X that the Nagaon, Nandigram and Rejinagar results "show yet again that the people have a deep-rooted connect with the good governance agenda of BJP-NDA." He congratulated the winning candidates and party workers, and also congratulated the AINRC on its Thattanchavady win.
What happens next
More bypolls and municipal elections are due in the coming months, including civic polls in Kolkata, Howrah and Bengaluru, and Rajya Sabha elections. Disputes over voter-list revisions (SIR) remain before the Supreme Court.
