Key results, top 10, country trends and what students should take from the new league table

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, released at the end of September 2026, ranks 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories, a record. The University of Oxford is number one for the 11th year in a row, but MIT is only 0.1 points behind, the smallest gap ever between first and second. The other big story is Asia's rise: Tsinghua University climbed to 11th, overtaking ETH Zurich, so Asia's top university now ranks above continental Europe's best.

Three Asian universities are in the top 15 for the first time:
China now has 17 universities in the top 200, up from 13. Malaysia entered the top 200 for the first time.
The US has 53 institutions in the top 200, two fewer than last year and the lowest number in the ranking's history. It still has the most ranked universities overall, at 168.
India has 143 ranked universities, second only to the US by number. Its top institutions remain outside the top 200. Coverage of the results noted that IISc Bengaluru fell to 254th.
The rankings were launched at the World Academic Summit hosted by the University of Cape Town. THE's chief global affairs officer Phil Baty said "the tectonic plates of global higher education are shifting permanently."
THE uses 17 performance indicators grouped into five areas:
The 2027 edition analysed almost 20 million research papers and close to 1 million survey votes. Individual ranks now go down to 300 (previously 200). Below that, universities are grouped in bands.
The University of Oxford, according to the THE World University Rankings 2027, for the 11th consecutive year.
Tsinghua University in China, ranked 11th in the world.
India has 143 ranked universities, the second-highest number after the United States.

The 2027 rankings show a gradual shift in global higher education. Oxford and the big US names still dominate the very top, but Asian universities, led by Tsinghua, are now ahead of continental Europe, and countries such as India, Malaysia and Nigeria are increasingly visible.
