How a post-war dream of Asian unity grew into the world's second-largest multi-sport event — and what India's journey says about it.
When athletes from across Asia gathered in New Delhi in March 1951, the continent was still emerging from war and colonial rule. Seventy-five years later, the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, bring together more than 10,000 athletes from 46 nations competing in 469 medal events across 43 sports.
This is the story of how the Asian Games grew into one of the world's biggest sporting events.
The idea of a pan-Asian sporting event had earlier roots in the Far Eastern Championship Games (from 1913) and the Western Asiatic Games (1934). After the Second World War and the independence of many Asian countries, leaders saw sport as a way to build solidarity.
Indian sports administrator Guru Dutt Sondhi is widely credited with championing the idea. The Asian Games Federation was formed in 1949 in New Delhi.

The 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi had an impact far beyond sport. The event accelerated major infrastructure projects — stadiums, flyovers and hotels — and is closely associated with the national rollout of colour television broadcasting in India. The Games' mascot, Appu the elephant, became a cultural icon.
